The Complete Newborn Essentials Checklist
What you actually need in the first month — and what you can skip
6 min read
Sleep
A safe, firm sleep surface (bassinet or crib), 4-6 fitted sheets, and 2-3 swaddles or sleep sacks. Skip the crib bumpers and loose blankets — they’re not recommended for safe sleep.
Feeding
Whether breast, bottle, or both: burp cloths (you’ll want more than you think), a nursing pillow, and if bottle feeding, 4-6 bottles with newborn-flow nipples and a bottle brush.
Clothing
Newborns grow fast — buy fewer 0-3 month items and more in 3-6 months. 6-8 onesies, 4-5 sleepsuits, a couple of cardigans, and soft mittens to stop face-scratching cover most of it.
Bath & care
A baby bath tub or bath support, 2-3 soft hooded towels, a gentle balm, and a grooming kit (brush, comb, nail file) round out the basics. You don’t need a dedicated baby bathtub if space is tight — a clean kitchen sink works for the first weeks.
What you can skip
Wipe warmers, shoes (newborns don’t walk), and most "newborn" sized outfits — many babies skip this size within days. Save your budget for what you’ll actually use for months, not days.
“Buy less than the checklists suggest for the newborn size, and more for 3-6 months — that’s where babies actually live the longest.”
