Postpartum Recovery, Week by Week

A gentle, honest timeline for healing after birth

Postpartum Recovery, Week by Week

Week 1: survival mode

Bleeding (lochia) is heaviest, hormones crash hard, and simply getting to the bathroom can feel like an achievement. This week is about rest, pads not tampons, and letting people help with everything except the baby if you don’t want them to.

Weeks 2-3: the emotional dip

The "baby blues" often peak around day 3-5 and should ease by week 3. If sadness, anxiety, or numbness persists or intensifies past this point, that’s worth mentioning to your doctor — it may be postpartum depression, which is common and treatable.

Weeks 4-6: physical milestones

Most stitches or tears have healed by now, and lochia usually tapers off. This is the classic marker for your 6-week postpartum check — don’t skip it, even if you feel "fine."

Months 2-3: rebuilding strength

Core and pelvic floor recovery is a marathon, not a sprint. Gentle walks and breathing-based core work (not crunches) support real healing. If you notice leaking, heaviness, or pain, a pelvic floor physiotherapist can help — this is extremely common and very fixable.

“Recovery isn’t linear, and "back to normal" by 6 weeks is a myth — give yourself the same patience you’d give a newborn.”
